Who We Are: We are 60,000 of your neighbors, co-workers and friends. We are a collaboration of donors, volunteers, organizations and experts—united in a shared goal to fight poverty in our community. Founded in 1923, United Way of Central Ohio is a locally-run organization serving Franklin County, Ohio. One of the largest and most innovative United Ways in the country, we recognize the power of joining together in order to build a community in which everyone has the aspirations, resources and opportunities to reach their fullest potential.

What We Do: Historically known as a fundraiser, United Way’s work has become much more sophisticated. We go beyond temporary fixes, bringing people and organizations together to develop solutions that get at the root of community problems, to create long-lasting change. We work with a network of more than 70 local nonprofit partners to fight poverty in these four critical areas:

  • Basic Needs – Ensuring people in crisis get food, shelter and assistance

  • Good Jobs – Teaching people the skills they need to get and keep a good job

  • Strong Neighborhoods – Engaging residents, businesses and government in revitalization efforts

  • Student Success – Helping children succeed from cradle to career

Why We're Important: There’s a startling trend in central Ohio: Unemployment has dropped dramatically, but the poverty level remains stubbornly high. Our metro cannot continue to grow when 1 in 3 people (including half the county’s children) are struggling to meet basic needs like food, housing, transportation and childcare.

As a community, when we speak and act together, our impact multiplies. As a result, United Way is working even harder to mobilize and convene community leaders, government agencies, businesses, volunteers and donors to change underlying conditions and help families succeed. The end result? A community that’s energized, vibrant and stronger than ever before.

How We Impact the Community: United Way’s Community Impact Fundpowers a network of good and strengthens every local nonprofit involved. These partners are doing the hard work to fight poverty and create opportunities for people who are struggling. For example:

  • United Way funded partners who served 16,500 children in youth development programs from birth through graduation.

  • 155,219 central Ohioans received food, shelter or assistance through United Way-funded partners in 2017.

  • In 2017, 1,021 people found good jobs after skills training provided by a United Way-funded partner – that’s 20 people a week!

  • When we invest in a neighborhood, other partners do too. Every $1 we invest leverages an additional $6.40. That means more refurbished homes, community gardens and safer streets.

How You Can Help: Join us to fight poverty. Together, as hand raisers and game changers, we can build a stronger future for central Ohio. United we fight. United we win!

  • GIVE: Make real change happen. The surest way to address the need is through donations, at your workplace or online.

  • ADVOCATE: Make your voice heard. Effective change requires increased awareness. Be informed and be vocal about the causes and issues that matter most to you.

  • VOLUNTEER: Touch someone’s life. Whether reading to children, stocking shelves at a food pantry or delivering meals to home-bound seniors, you have opportunities to get involved every day.
