MAKE-A-WISH OHIO, KENTUCKY & INDIANA
Who We Are: Make-A-Wish® Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana (Make-A-Wish OKI) creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Founded in 1983, Make-A-Wish OKI is the largest chapter in the nation. We serve children in every county of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana— 300 counties in all— and we receive referrals from 14 different children’s hospitals. Every year, we grant more than 800 wishes and since our founding, we’ve granted more than 17,000 wishes.
What We Do: Children with critical illnesses often
live in a climate of “no” – no friends, no sports, no playing outside, etc., but Make-A-Wish says “yes” to something they deeply want and that “yes” is very powerful. A wish turns fear into courage, worry into hope, and it recharges their fighting spirit.
During a wish, kids get to just be kids, parents are gifted a much-needed break from the stress of hospital stays and work, and families finally, “feel normal again.”
Why We're Important: Wishes have proven physical and emotional benefits that help children battling critical illnesses. 74% of wish parents say the wish marked a turning point in their children’s response to treatment. In fact, a vast majority of wish kids – about 80% – go on to beat their illnesses and live typical, healthy lives. Make-A-Wish is not a last-wish organization. Groundbreaking new research even shows wishes may help sick kids get and stay better.
How You Can Help: With our current funding, we are only able to grant 1 out of every 2 eligible wishes. That means for every wish we grant, there is another child waiting for a wish. But, wishes can’t wait— every critically-ill child, every family, every community deserves the hope, strength, and healing power a wish delivers. We need your help to meet the growing demand for wishes.
