COLUMBUS HUMANE

Who We Are: As an innovative leader in animal welfare, Columbus Humane provides critical resources to more than 8,000 animals and thousands more people every year. Since1883, we have been fighting animal cruelty, helping animals in need and advocating for their well-being. Our work embodies our values: expertise, innovation, collaboration and endurance. We support those in need, we protect those being neglected or abused, we provide love to animals in our care and help families find a forever friend. Our vision is for every companion animal to have a safe, loving, happy and healthy home. Yes, it’s about animals, but it’s about people, too.

What We Do: We are known for adoptions, but we do so much more!

  • We provide resources and support for people who are struggling to provide care for their pets.

  • We respond to reports of animal cruelty and neglect.

  • We partner with the Veterinary College of Ohio State University to provide training opportunities for every fourth year student at our veterinary hospital.

  • We provide free housing, food, and medical care for the animals of victims of domestic violence through our Safe Haven program.

  • We care for an average of 250 animals daily, including more than 25 different species.

Why We're Important: Columbus Humane is a non-profit organization with law enforcement responsibilities. Through our Cruelty Investigations Department, we make more than 6,000 visits a year to help animals in crisis, maintain a conviction rate of over 90% of offenders, and admit more than 1,200 animals. We look for collaborative solutions for pet homelessness. With the generosity of George and Tina Skestos, we have been able to expand our transfer program, which helps to connect dogs at overcrowded and under-resourced shelters with our facility where we have increased capacity for adoption and a high placement rate. Gigi’s Shelter for Dogs, the first facility of its kind in the country, will help Columbus Humane adopt out 1,500 more dogs and impact thousands more animals from Southern Ohio annually.

How We Impact the Community: While Columbus Humane acts as a champion for homeless and neglected animals, we also act as a resource for people in need. We help find innovative solutions to keep families united and animals out of the shelter, if possible. We work with victims of domestic violence by keeping their animals safe so that they can get themselves safe. We offer charity boarding to those who need short-term solutions to critical problems. We work to prevent pet homelessness through 4,500 spays/neuters annually. While you may not always see it, our impact on the Columbus community is a 365 / 7 day a week one and we are proud of it.
